Higher Level Apprenticeship – Civil Engineering

Alex Fenton, Higher Level Apprenticeship, Civil Engineering

19-year-old Alex Fenton from Portglenone spoke about his experience of studying a Higher Level Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering at North West Regional College:

‘’Before I came to the college, I completed my AS Levels in school and moved to Northern Regional College where I studied full-time. I completed my Level 3 in Construction and the Built Environment and worked part-time as well.

‘’I applied for North West Regional College’s Civil Engineering Apprenticeship through the Institution of Civil Engineers Work Plus scheme who advised me to apply for work in five different civil engineering companies and luckily I got accepted into Farran’s Construction which is based in Belfast.

‘’Farran’s also gave me the option of studying at South West College in Omagh or North West Regional College in Derry/Londonderry which I chose to attend because I heard lots of good things about the college and it was closer to my home as well.”

He added: ‘’I’m glad I chose to study here because I really enjoy my Civil Engineering Apprenticeship and my lecturers are always really helpful especially If I don’t understand how to do something. My classmates are also really friendly and I get on well with all of them.

‘’By the end of my Higher Level Apprenticeship course I’d like to achieve the best grades as I possibly can. I’d also like to apply to university but I’ll decide what I want to do when the time comes.

‘’I would really recommend people to choose the Higher Level Apprenticeship route especially if they’re interested in Civil Engineering because I’m able to earn while I learn and receive a higher level qualification accredited by Ulster University.
